I just found out recently about the death of a friend's spouse. It was a sudden stroke, and it's very sad. My condolences to her and her family. If my memory serves me correctly, this gentleman was overweight and also had diabetes. And if my memory still serves me right, this man didn't pay much attention to what he ate and did not exercise. A recipe for disaster? Yes -- in his retirement years, when he and his wife were supposed to be enjoying life together, traveling, and making memories, he is gone, and she is alone.
I would like you to now refer to the Food for Thought section of this blog. It says "Health is a choice." My Aunt Jane said this in a recent email to me, and though it is a simple statement, the meaning behind it is PROFOUND!!! It's true -- absolutely true. Many people would say "Oh, this poor man died after having a stroke . . ." And please PLEASE do not take these next statements harshly -- but the truth is, he CHOSE his status of health! He was NOT a victim -- he chose to be overweight/not lose the weight, he chose to eat wrong despite having diabetes (and despite his wife's encouraging him to eat better), and he chose to not exercise. All of these choices lead to one thing: his early death, and probably a less enjoyable life.
Again -- my heart goes out to anyone whose loved one has passed on -- I recently lost my precious grandmother to cancer. She lived 80 years, and really, she was ready to go be with Jesus; she was tired and ready for a new heavenly body! These old bodies don't last forever -- there IS an expiration date! But what I want to help everyone see/realize/understand, is that you DO have a LOT to do with not only how long you live, but HOW you live. It's all dependent on your every-day-choices!!!
Many times we think that we are being selfish by spending money on quality supplements, by spending our time exercising (instead of spending time with the family perhaps), or by taking the time to learn about health & wellness. But I want to suggest that it is selfish NOT to take care of yourself! Think about how many people depend on you! If you are a mess, have no energy, and feel badly, then how in the world are you going to take care of anyone else??? And when we put in the time, money, energy to take care of ourselves, that sends a valuable message to others (like our kids) that taking care of ourselves is important, and that they too should care about what they eat and what choices they make on a daily basis!
Well . . . that's all for now. The good news is that it's NOT too late for you, my friends. Your health is your choice! What will YOU do TODAY to ensure that you not only live LONG but live WELL? It's not selfish, you know.
